Поморская лодия ПИЛИГРИМ продолжает свою штатную зимовку на берегу озера Верхнее в Твин-Портс (города Сьюпериор и Дулут, США), в Loon's Foot марине. С октября 2020 года уникальное деревянное судно стоит на суше и постоянно приходят вопросы и комментарии: почему лодия не закрыта тентами, не спрятана от ветров какими-то покрытиями?! Ответ был дан ещё строителями верфи "Полярный Одиссей" в Петрозаводске: " поморские лодии строились именно для суровых зимних условий Северного Ледовитого океана, на них поморы в XVII-XVIII веках зимовали во время своих многомесячных переходов " Суровая зима в окрестностях Дулута: снега, холода, ветра и скупое солнце но старинная деревянная лодия не укрывается с головой. А это поморская закалка: мороз укрепляет тело и дух, собирает силы воедино, учит терпению и смирению.
Известно, что климат в Твин-Портс: в Дулуте (Миннесота) и Сьюпериор (Висконсин) вовсе не сахар, и потому места эти считаются самыми холодными в США (исключая, конечно, Аляску)! Здешняя средняя суточная температура - с середины ноября до начала апреля - оказывается вблизи нуля градусов Цельсия. Осадков выпадает более 700 мм в год, так что и на лето хватает и на зиму - в виде снега. В целом среднегодовая температура в Твин-Портс всего +3,8 C. Очевидно, что такую суровость климату придаёт озеро Верхнее - самое холодное из всех пяти Американских озёр, второе по величине в мире после Каспия. Оно и притягивает в Твин-Портс холода Арктики.
Смотришь на грустные фотографии Кристофера Пасконе (Christopher Pascone) и Джейн Херрик (Jane Herrick) как зимуется старинной лодочке на берегу озера Верхнего, и становится её как-то даже жалко: первой приходит мысль: укрыть судёнышко, спрятать от снегов, холодов и ветров под ткани и покровы, под чехлы и тенты, но эта мысль обманчива, потому что поморская лодия ПИЛИГРИМ строилась именно для самых суровых ледовых пространств по чертежам и по опыту тех славных древних мореходов-поморов, которые ходили в XVII-XVIII веках по Северному Ледовитому океану, доходили и до золотой Мангазеи, и до Груманта, а уж про походы в Старую Англию и говорить нечего - тот маршрут был самым простым по сравнению с мангазейным на восток.
Потому не грустите, друзья, когда видите на зимовке славный ПИЛИГРИМ открытым всем ветрам и холодам, без тентов и укрытий, а представьте себе зимовку такого судна в Северном Ледовитом океане, вблизи устьев великих северных русских рек, вблизи Таймыра или у Берингова пролива! - и вам сразу станет тепло, легко и приятно видеть ПИЛИГРИМ на стоянке в Твин-Портс на берегу озера Верхнего.
На момент прихода лодии ПИЛИГРИМ в порт Дулут ею уже пройдено по морям-океанам Земли более 12000 миль, и есть успешный опыт суровой зимовки лодии (2017-2018) на плаву в реке Эмс в северной Германии, в городе Веенер. Всё было просто прекрасно! Хотя, конечно же, остальные зимовки, большинство, проходили в более мягких условиях.
Так что, ныне в Дулуте, в Сьюпериоре всё штатно и наша лодия, без всякого укрытия, прекрасно себя чувствует, спит себе тихохонько, посапывает сладко, ждёт весеннего обновления, новых красок, новой весны, тепла и света.
Ждём и мы все - экипаж "Пилигрима", а также друзья и болельщики, все кто с нами в этом Кругосветном плавании, а нас, как выясняется 44 272 человека! - все кто следил и откликался на наш переход по Великим Американским озёрам от Гудзона до Дулута! - все желают славной лодии крепкого и лёгкого сна до весеннего пробуждения.

Severe winter in the vicinity of Duluth: snow, cold, winds and a stingy sun but the old wooden lodya is not covered with a head. It is Pomor's tempering: frost strengthens the body and spirit, gathers strength together, teaches patience and humility.
It is known that the climate in Twin Ports: in Duluth (Minnesota) and Superior (Wisconsin) not sugar at all, and therefore these places are considered the coldest in the United States (excluding, of course, Alaska)! The local average daily temperature - from mid-November to early April - is near zero degrees Celsius. Precipitation falls more than 700 mm per year, so that it is enough rains for the summer and for the winter - snow. In general, the average annual temperature in Twin Ports is only + 3.8 C. It is obvious that Lake Superior, the coldest of all the five American lakes, and the second largest in the world after the Caspian Sea, gives such a harsh climate. The lake attracts the cold of the Arctic to Twin Ports.
You look at the sad photos of Christopher Pascone and Jane Herrick, you see how an old boat winters on the shores of Lake Upper, and it becomes somehow even pathetic: the first thought comes: hide the ship, hide it from the snow, cold and winds under the fabric. But this idea is deceptive, because the Pomeranian lodya of PILGRIM was built precisely for the harshest ice spaces according to the drawings and the experience of those glorious ancient pomor seafarers who walked in the 17th-18th centuries along the Arctic Ocean, reached both golden Mangazei and Grumant, and if about the navigations to Old Anglia - that route was the easiest compared to the mangazey's east.
So do not be sad, friends, when you see a glorious PILGRIM on the winter camp, open to all winds and cold, without tents and shelters, but imagine the winter of such a ship in the Arctic Ocean, near the mouths of the great northern Russian rivers, near the Taimyr or the Bering Strait! - and it will be warm and easy and pleasant to see the PILGRIM in the parking lot at Twin Ports on the shores of cold Lake Superior.
At the time of the arrival of lodya PILGRIM in the port of Duluth, she has already traveled more than 12,000 miles across the seas-oceans of the Earth, and there is a successful experience of severe wintering of lodya (2017-2018) afloat in the Ems River in northern Germany, in the city of Veener. Everything was just fine! Although, of course, the rest of the wintering, most of them, took place in milder conditions.
But you remember, friends, that the Pomor lodya Pilgrim Round-the-World trip continues, and not only the crossing of the United States to the Pacific coast, to Seattle, is ahead - which is a unique event in itself: for the first time in history, an old wooden vessel of this kind should be moved such a long distance, but cold ocean waters near Alaska are waiting for the lodya, which means that ice wintering will there similar to the one that Pilgrim is experiencing in Twin Ports now.
So, now in Duluth, in Superior, everything is normal and our lodia, without any shelter, feels great, sleeps quietly, snores sweetly, waits for spring renewal, new colors, new spring, warmth and light.
We are also waiting for all of us - the crew of the PILGRIM, as well as friends and fans, all who are with us on this Circumnavigation of the World, and we, as it turns out, are 44,272 people! - all who followed and responded to our passage on the Great American Lakes from the Hudson to Duluth! - everyone wishes the glorious lodya a light sleep until the spring awakening.
